OLA - S1 PRO

OLA S1 Genius is an electric bike accessible in just 1 variation and 12 tones. S1 Ace cost begins at Rs. 1,03,827 in India. OLA S1 Ace creates 5500 W power from its engine. With both front and back circle brakes, OLA S1 Expert concocts consolidated slowing mechanism of the two wheels.

The Ola S1 Genius is the top notch variation of the S1 electric bike range from Ola Electric. This variation of the S1 territory packs higher determinations and highlights more variety choices than the standard S1 electric bike.

The S1 Pro's electric motor is calibrated to provide a maximum power of 8.5 kW and a maximum torque of 58 Nm. According to the manufacturer, the highest speed will be 115 kph, and the range will be 181 kilometres on a full charge, compared to 90 kph and 121 km for the standard model. For a range of 75km, the 3.97 kWh battery pack can be rapidly charged in 18 minutes. The charging process is said to take six and a half hours in total.

Similar to the standard model, the features list includes a twin-pod headlamp up front, sleek LED indicators positioned on the apron, a body-colored front fender, curved side panels, a sleek LED taillight, an external charging port at the back, and a grabrail for the pillion. Two open-face helmets can fit in the 36-litre under-seat storage compartment on the scooter. There are 10 different colour variations available for the Pro version.

Presence lock/unlock, remote boot lock, call alert, message alert, infotainment, side-stand alert, anti-theft alert, geo-fencing, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, onboard navigation, limp home mode, reverse mode, get-me-home lights, find my scooter, HMI moods with sound, electronic steering lock, HMI brightness adjuster, welcome screen, OTA updates, manual SOS, and predictive maintenance are all standard features on both models. The hill-hold system, cruise control, voice assistance, and three riding modes (Normal, Sport, and Hyper) are additional advantages of the Pro version.

Both versions have similar hardware. Thus, a single front fork, a rear mono-shock, disc brakes on both wheels, and a combined braking system take care of the suspension duties.

Introduction

Even though the Move OS2 software has been upgraded, this is still the Ola S1 Pro. And Ola claims that the bugs afflicting the S1 Pro have been fixed with this update, including the scooter losing power, travelling in reverse when the forward mode is selected, and the absence of all those promised features.

But Ola has a history of making exaggerated promises. It's not just the inclusion of extra features that makes an electric scooter purchase worthwhile. Additional factors to take into account are the quality of the ride, range, performance, and suitability for the intended use. And this was as good a time as any to test an S1 Pro as we hadn't done so yet.

Styling & Quality

Even if just in part, the S1 has a good-looking scooter design. The scooter looks equally contemporary, friendly, and desired from the front and front three-quarter views. But the rear-end design is pathetic, out of proportion, and more like an afterthought than a well-thought-out result.

On the other hand, we thought the touchscreen display was really nice. The graphics are good, the information is adequate, and while the touch sensitivity is inferior to that of a mobile, it is neither sluggish nor unresponsive.

Quality is also not subpar. Although it lacks a firm sense of build quality and occasionally has broad and uneven panel gaps, it doesn't appear cheap or hurriedly put together.

Ergonomics & Comfort

A comfortable 800mm or less is the seat height of the S1 Pro. It also features a handlebar that is fairly tall. However, the rider is forced to adopt a knee-up stance due to the high floorboard, which reduces the vertical space between the seat and floorboard. The sitting triangle isn't the most comfy as a result.

To add, the seat isn’t comfortable either. The padding on it is thin. And, almost immediately, it feels as if you are seated on the seat’s frame instead of something cushy. The ride quality is just about average as well. One can feel the road in its entirety - every bump, every ripple, every change in surface comes at you like someone talking in your ear. And not whispering, mind. But, it manages to stay on the right side of not being harsh.

The overall comfort levels on the S1 Pro then won’t have you constantly complaining about it, but it will always play on your mind. Almost like a chore.

Performance & Handling

On paper, this is where the S1 Pro excels. And, if nothing else, one is drawn in by Ola's claims. The scooter's motor has a rated power and torque of just over 7bhp and 58Nm, and it is powered by a 3.97kwh battery pack. The scooter, according to Ola, can go from 0 to 40 kilometres per hour in three seconds and from there to 60 kilometres per hour in just two seconds. Moreover, 115kmph is listed as the maximum speed. So the S1 Pro does look good on paper, as we said.

The performance sense in Hyper mode is undoubtedly great in the real world. The scooter is certainly speedy, there's no denying that. Once the S1 starts moving, there is just no stopping the acceleration. One can take advantage of its performance because it keeps its composure the entire time. Additionally, braking performs fairly effectively, especially in terms of bite and power.

Additionally, one doesn't always need to use the Hyper mode to experience the S1's strong performance. The S1 Pro never feels sluggish or slow, even while in Sport and Normal settings. For want of a better word, it's certainly not as pumped up, yet it never feels monotonously slow. Obviously, the top speeds of the scooter are constrained by the mode. However, it isn't much of a hassle until you are using Eco mode, which turns the S1 Pro from a hare to a sloth.  There is a catch, though. The S1 Pro's speedometer frequently overreads. Therefore, even though the scooter's display indicates that it is moving at 60 kph, it is actually moving at 52 kph.

Similarly, when the display reads 100kmph, the S1 is actually at 88kmph. And then your sense of accomplishment takes a beating because you thought you hit 116kmph, eclipsing the claimed 115kmph, only to realise you barely made it to three digits, hitting a true speed of 100kmph. As a result, it puts all of Ola’s performance claims under a cloud of doubt. But having said that, there’s no taking away from the fact that the feel-of-performance, and the fun element it brings in, is still very strong for the scooter.

There are other smaller issues too. For instance, one can only enjoy the Hyper mode for a few minutes before it switches to Normal. Trying to move back to Sport or Hyper thereafter only returns an audible warning to take things easy. One must then stop, let it cool down, and only then can you regain access to the quicker modes.

Moreover, the S1 Pro lacks feel. Whether it's the throttle response, the brake feel, or even how it responds to inputs when turning into a bend, the scooter clearly lacks feedback. The Ola feels more like a tool than something that may be enjoyable because of the coldness of the communication.

Features & Technology

When the S1 hit the market, Ola made enormous feature promises. The business, however, did not fulfil them at the time. With the updated software, that has partially been corrected now. Eco mode, Bluetooth connectivity, music playback on the built-in speakers, cruise control, navigation, and display dark and light modes are now available for the scooter. However, the scooter still lacks the automated proximity-unlock capability, as well as the modes, widgets, and voice control.

Software aside, the S1 has a sizable underseat storage area. LED lighting is installed throughout. Combination braking is present. Additionally, the seven-inch touchscreen instrumentation does provide a lot of information. We would have preferred the option of a split-screen view while riding with the ability to select what information should be displayed, if anything.

We would have also liked a mechanical solution to the boot opening of the scooter so that it could be accessed even if the scooter’s battery was flat.

Should you buy it?

Let's take two different perspectives on the S1 Pro. Initially as a scooter in its entirety, and subsequently as an electric scooter. To determine where it stands against the competition as a product and whether it can be a viable substitute for the former, we must compare it to ICE scooters.

And as a scooter, the Ola S1 Pro is average at best. It is playing catch up with the current crop of internal combustion-engined scooters when it comes to sound ergonomics, build quality, comfort, ride, handling, practicality, braking, and the calibration of various controls. It just doesn’t feel intuitive. But, of course, when it comes to features, the Ola does have the current crop beat.

As an electric scooter, however, the S1 is right up there. Be it acceleration, range, storage space, features, and even design and styling, for that matter, and the Ola does have this one in the bag. And as for all the issues that have been plaguing Ola scooters so far, as it turns out, with this Move OS2 update, apart from the scooter jumping out of Hyper mode in only minutes of riding, nothing else cropped up during our time with it.Does it mean it’s all solved? For Ola’s sake, we do hope so…
