TVS IQube

In India, the TVS iQube electric scooter has a starting price of Rs. 1,14,793. There are 3 variations and 7 colours available, with the top variant starting at Rs. 1,25,000. The motor of the TVS iQube produces 3000 W of electricity. Both the front and rear brakes of the TVS iQube are drum brakes.

TVS has introduced the iQube electric scooter in India, joining the green revolution alongside a number of other prominent manufacturers. The iQube, the manufacturer's first electric two-wheeler, boasts a traditional scooter-like look mixed with a host of contemporary technologies and promises respectable performance and battery range.

The iQube has a conventional scooter-like overall form, but some of its design cues give it a more futuristic feel. This features a U-shaped LED DRL on the handlebar cowl as well as stylish headlamp and tail lamp designs. In addition, TVS has given it useful features including a roomy seat, roomy footboard, a sizable under-seat storage area, and baggage hooks. Additionally, it has a USB charging port underneath the seat for powering up electronics.

Powering the iQube are three lithium-ion batteries which collectively have a power rating of 2.25kWh. While it fully charges in around five hours, the claimed range stands at 75kms. Propelling the scooter is a 4.4kW hub-mounted BLDC motor which produces 140Nm of torque at the wheel. TVS claims it can achieve a top speed of 40kmph in Eco mode and 78kmph in Sport mode while the 0-40kmph acceleration time is 4.2 seconds.

Additionally, the iQube has a full-LED lighting system and a full-color TFT instrument cluster with TVS' SmartXonnect feature. Through Bluetooth, it is possible to link the display to a smartphone and gain access to a variety of data, including ride statistics, remote battery range, and geo fence. Additionally, this console has navigational features and displays notifications of incoming calls and messages. It's interesting that the iQube features a Q-Park option for simpler parking.

It is supported by telescoping front forks and twin shock absorbers up front and back, and it rides on 12-inch wheels. A front disc brake and a rear drum brake are used for braking. The iQube weighs 118 kg on average.

With the iQube, TVS hopes to compete against the Bajaj Chetak electric and the Ather 450, both of which are currently only offered in a few places across India.

Introduction

In a market flooded with inexpensive Chinese imports and EV startups, the TVS iQube S is one of the few electric scooters produced by an OEM two-wheeler manufacturer. TVS has revised the iQube line for 2022 with more variations, more features, more colour choices, and a higher range, among other things. How does the new TVS iQube ride feel, then? And should you think about purchasing one? Let's investigate.

Styling and Quality

The TVS iQube is a stylish scooter with a modern appearance that ought to be appealing to most people. It isn't as flamboyant as the Ather 450X or neo-retro as the Ola S1 Pro and the Bajaj Chetak Electric. Although it has certain contemporary additions to set it distinct from its ICE sibling, the overall profile is substantially similar to that of the TVS Jupiter.

On the other hand, we thought the switchgear's robustness and paint quality, which operates with acceptable tactility, were rather good. However, the same cannot be said of its somewhat inconsistent build quality.  A few fit and finish flaws around the visor, panel gaps around the front apron, and a shoddy finish on the plastic cover below the rider seat were discovered despite the generally high quality levels.

Ergonomics and Comfort

Since the iQube S's accessible seat height is 770mm, it's easy to put both of your feet flat on the ground. Additionally, the broad footboard makes it comfortable for you to put your feet down, but what's even more impressive is that the floorboard readily fits your riding boots, with enough room left over for a bag.

Additionally, the relatively high handlebar and the roomy, wide seat combine to create a cosy seating triangle. You can ride for an hour or two without stopping because the seat cushioning is excellent and your lower body is well supported.

Regarding ride comfort, the iQube has a supple suspension system. Although the suspension is set up on the firmer side, it does a remarkable job of handling bridge joints and uneven ground. You won't often moan about any discomfort. Nevertheless, the larger potholes and the annoying rumbler strips do cause the back to somewhat shake.

Features and Tech

After the 2022 update, the TVS iQube S is a decently equipped electric scooter. The scooter includes reverse park assist, Bluetooth connectivity, a turn-by-turn navigation system, and linked technology with 35 connectivity capabilities. There are two lighting modes for the seven-inch instrument cluster, which displays a lot of data. Even in bright sunshine, it is easily readable; unfortunately, the aesthetics are drab, and the UI could use some improvement.

You can access the various function of the instrument cluster via a five-way joystick. However, the accessibility is counter-intuitive as it requires multiple attempts to navigate through the desired menu/function that you want. That apart, the scooter gets a 17-litre boot capacity, which is just about average.

TVS iQube Scooter Portable Charger

As far as charging is concerned, the iQube S comes bundled with a 650-watt three-pin wall-mount charger that charges the scooter from 0-80 per cent in 4h and 30m. You can also opt for a faster 950-watt charger that charges the scooter to 80 per cent in 2h and 50m. However, this is an optional extra.

Performance and Handling

A hub-mounted BLDC motor with a maximum output of 5.9 horsepower and 33 Nm is used in the TVS iQube S. A 3.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack that has a genuine range of 105km in Eco mode and 75km in Power mode powers the electric motor. A top speed of 78kmph is also claimed by TVS. What about in the actual world, then? Let's investigate.

The iQube is remarkably silent, which will please you. There is hardly any audible electric whining coming from the scooter, which is partially attributable to the hub-mounted motor. As previously announced, the scooter now has two modes: Eco and Power. The iQube seems fast and responsive even in Eco mode. Up to roughly 40 kmph, which is the most speed you'll ever need in stop-and-go city traffic, there is ample poke. Additionally, it is barely sufficient to make overtakes in traffic. If you want to ride enthusiastically, you must switch to Power mode after 40 kmph because the progress slows down after that.

Having saying that, the iQube feels quite different in Power mode. The impression of power is definitely there, even though it isn't nearly as intense as, example, the Ather 450X or the Ola S1 Pro in their respective Warp and Hyper settings. The scooter accelerates quickly to a speedo-indicated top speed of 84 kmph and keeps up that performance for extended periods of time. The smooth transition between riding modes is another advantage. First and foremost, there is no need to shut off the throttle when changing modes, and secondly, power delivery is unaffected.

The way the regenerative braking operates is another benefit. Regenerative braking kicks in as soon as you let off the gas, starting to slow down the car and thereby charging the battery. Since the scooter doesn't free-wheel once you roll off the throttle, it does take some getting accustomed to. But if you get the hang of it, you won't often feel the need to apply the brakes when decelerating. The brakes' robust stopping ability allows you to stop the scooter quickly and easily even when you have to use them. The lever has a solid feel and feedback, and the brakes have a respectable bite and development.

When it comes to handling, the scooter feels secure and keeps its composure nicely during wide turns. While weaving through traffic, the iQube is surprisingly flickable, and switching from one side to the other feels more natural. In addition, the scooter feels exciting and sure-footed to turn, which is largely attributable to TVS's successful achievement of a solid chassis balance. The scooter also doesn't feel as calm as, say, the Ather 450X, which has a tauter suspension arrangement, even though it keeps its line when doing quick turns.

Should you buy it?

A very well-rounded electric scooter with modern style, a wide selection of amenities, and a good balance between performance and comfort is the TVS iQube S. It ranks highly in terms of build quality, sound engineering, ride comfort, and practicality even when compared to its ICE competitors. Additionally, the Ather 450X, HeroVida V1, Bajaj Chetak Electric, and the Ola S1 all cost far more than this vehicle when you consider its asking price of Rs. 1.04 lakh (on-road Delhi).

That said, the instrumentation UI is basic, and the features list is just about adequate. Moreover, our test unit had a few fit-and-finish issues, but that’s just us trying to nitpick. So, should you consider buying the iQube S? Well, the answer is a resounding yes! If you are environment conscious and are also looking at lower running costs, the TVS iQube S is one of the best electric scooters available in the market.
